APPLIED RESEARCH Completed studies Studies on sputum transported in cetyl pyridinium chloride for detection of M. tuberculosis Background Drug resistance surveys require transportation of sputum samples collected from pulmonary TB patients in cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC) solution to the reference laboratory for bacteriological investigations. It was observed that smears from sputum transport...
متن کاملCetyl Pyridinium Chloride : I. Germicidal Properties.
Cetyl pyridinium chloride is a cationic detergent which is soluble in water, chloroform, alcohol, and acetone. Aqueous solutions are clear, colorless, and odorless. The agent has a depressant action upon surface tension. This property enhances the value of the germicide because irregular surfaces are uniformly wetted. The germicidal properties of cetyl pyridinium chloride were first studied in ...
متن کاملCetyl-pyridinium chloride is useful for isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from sputa subjected to long-term storage.
Recovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from sputa treated with cetyl-pyridinium chloride (CPC) and stored for 20 +/- 9 days was significantly higher than that from sputa that were untreated and processed by the N-acetyl-L-cisteine-NaOH method. Addition of CPC is useful for isolation of M. tuberculosis from sputa subjected to long-term storage received from remote areas of the world.
متن کاملComparison of sodium carbonate, cetyl-pyridinium chloride, and sodium borate for preservation of sputa for culture of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is essential for a successful treatment of patients, mainly those with a previous history of antituberculosis therapy. Susceptibility testing of strains requires their isolation from sputum samples within 24 to 48 h of collection and storage at 2° to 4°C. If the sample is left at room temperature or in refrigeration for longer p...
متن کاملSensitivity of Ziehl-Neelsen method for centrifuged deposit smears of sputum samples transported in cetyl-pyridinium chloride.
BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Sensitivity of Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) method is known to be low for liquefied sputum smears. Information on the ZN sensitivity for centrifuged deposit smears is not known. This study was carried out to determine the sensitivity of ZN method for acid fast bacilli (AFB) in centrifuged deposit smears and liquefied sputum smears made from sputum samples transported in cetyl-pyri...
